Broadoak Primary School

Broadoak's House Captains

House Captain elections are always an exciting time in Year Six and this year was no exception! The prospective candidates wrote and delivered their speeches to the children from Year Six. Each House then took part in a secret ballot. The teachers involved were very impressed with the calibre of speeches this year and the enthusiasm and confidence shown by all the candidates involved. As ever, there can only be two children elected from each house but the teachers were proud of the Broadoak Values demonstrated by all the children in Year Six throughout the elections, particularly those children who were unsuccessful. Well done everyone!

The House Captains will be responsible for uniting their Houses, leading exciting initiatives and setting an excellent example to their peers.

Our House Captains play a huge part in our weekly celebration assembly - leading many rewards and recognition for children across the school.

Eco Council Projects

December 2014 - Broadoak's Big Tidy Up

This year marks the 60th birthday of ‘Keep Britain Tidy’. The movement that originated from the Women’s Institute has teamed up with seventies TV characters ‘The Wombles’ this year to launch many ‘Big Tidy Up’ events across Britain to reduce litter and clean up areas all over the country.

On the recent Year One visit to Worsley Woods many staff and children noticed litter spoiling the area. They passed this information onto the Eco-council. Broadoak decided to get involved in our own, ‘Big Tidy Up’ event. This will take place on Friday 12th December from 1pm with all members of the Eco-council and a randomly selected group of Year One children taking part. The children will be supported by a team of school staff.

We wanted all children to get involved in the reduction of litter in the area so the ‘Litterizers’ (Eco sub-committee) are launching a poster competition for the whole school. During our ‘Big Tidy Up’ event we are going to display winning posters in areas of high litter as a reminder to people not to drop litter. There will also be prizes for winning entries. All entries are to be completed and passed onto class teachers by Friday 5th December.

January 2014 - Big Schools' Bird Watch

This takes place 13th - 19th January. It will be an opportunity for classes to get involved spotting different species around our school grounds and working on ways to try and attract more bird life in different areas of the school.

March 2014 - Milk Bottle Recycling (Part of waste week)

As a school we have over 200 small bottles of milk a day. Currently these are not recycled. In March the Recyclones are going to work with nominated members of different classes to find a manageable method of recycling these in school.

There will be a competition later this year to create the best recycled character that will be our school symbol of recycling. Remember the Recyclones rap...

You have to be the best,

Or you’re just the same as the rest,

Our green monster is called Tess,

He recycles all of his mess,

Now he has passed his eco-test,

He is Broadoak’s special guest!

Eco Curriculum

In addition to these activities all classes will have the opportunity to explore key eco issues as part of their work across a range of topics.
